What do we look for WHEN EVALUATING a Tiffany Studios Lamp?
CONDITION
Condition is important to collectors and is critical when determining an accurate value of a Tiffany Studios lamp. Repairs, restorations, cracked glass, dents on metal bases are all considered when determining value.
IDENTIFICATION
Tiffany Studios shades and bases are specific designs that are well-documented. Each shade pattern is cut from specific templates and the glass cuts should be identical across all models of the same number. The only variation comes from the glass selection that was chosen by the design team. This is why two of the same shade model will be the exact same size and layout. but can have drastically different colors. Rare colors like blue, reds and purples can add value. Bases can also be identified by documented models.
SIGNATURES
The vast majority for Tiffany Studios shades will have a signature tag on the lower inside rim that reads “TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK”. Some will have an additional tag to the right of the signature tag that shows the model number of the shade. Bases will also have markings on the underside or baseplate that reads “TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK” and a three-digit model number, or in earlier models a TGDC logo and order number. Just because a shade or base is signed DOES NOT mean the lamp is authentic.
PATINA
Most lamps are either bronze patina, gold doré acid-etched finish or a statuary bronze, in order of desirability for collectors. The surfaces of the metal base and the leading of the shade should have an original, aged patina. Missing flakes, touch-ups, dents and oxidation are all considerations when valuing a lamp. Parts that have been replaced will often have noticeably different patina and also effect value.
PROVENANCE
The history of the lamp can help bolster value when documentation accompanies the lamp. Was it purchased from a trusted dealer? Was the lamp a documented purchase from a top-tier auction house that is well-known for selling Tiffany Studios works? Perhaps the lamp is a family heirloom with a documented history from generation to generation. The history can add credibility for potential buyers.
WHY US?
Being an appraiser means being able to estimate a value for a specific purpose with the ‘assumption’ that a lamp is authentic.
